The Carolina Youth Action Project (CYAP) is an abolitionist organization that centers political education and community organizing to build power among girls, trans youth, and gender nonconforming youth. We envision a South Carolina transformed by the radical organizing of girls, trans youth, and gender nonconforming youth, where our communities work collectively to dismantle the existing structures of domination, violence, and punishment that shape their lives and create spaces for growth and healing in their place.

The Carolina Youth Action Project is seeking a Campaign Lead to facilitate the development and coordination of long-term campaigns efforts led by youth organizers in Charleston, South Carolina. The Campaign Lead will serve as a member of a core team who grounds and guide the organization’s work. They will work closely with CYAP’s Youth Initiative Organizer, who coordinates the Youth Action Alliance and Youth Leader Institute.

We believe that our leaders should reflect the communities in which we work. Therefore, women, trans people, gender nonconforming people, people of color, working class people, and people who have been directly impacted by the justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.

Individual Responsibilities

Campaign Development

  • Develop and coordinate Safer Schools Without SROs campaign

  • Develop and coordinate Sex Education Beyond Abstinence campaign

  • Develop and guide organizational campaign strategy

  • Facilitate weekly campaign planning and strategizing meetings on Mondays

  • Co-coordinate a campaign convening on November 9, 2019

  • Facilitate meetings with youth organizers

  • Plan and facilitate organizing trainings

  • Organize local events including direct actions and community forums

  • Develop and implement organizing strategies to recruit, sustain, and actively engage community members  

  • Expand active base of supporters and volunteers

  • Track engagement of campaign supporters and volunteers

  • Conduct research about campaign related topics

  • Document and evaluate campaign strategy

Communications

  • Maintain and update communications toolkit

  • Update social media tracker

  • Update website

  • Post to social media once a week

Shared Responsibilities

Core Team

  • Attend and co-facilitate bi-monthly full core team meetings

  • Attend monthly check-in with full-time organizers

  • Contribute to strategic planning and organizational development

  • Support with future hiring and training of new organizers

  • Support with updating and maintaining organizational database

  • Support communications work

  • Travel to select conferences, trainings, convenings, and site visits

  • Develop and strengthen alliances with (potential) partner organizations

  • Create and be accountable to individual leadership development plan

  • Create and be accountable to individual wellness plan

  • Participate in semi-annual evaluations

  • Engage in continued self-reflection and political development

  • Communicate openly about any organizational questions, conflicts, and concerns

  • Experience working with criminalized youth, particularly youth of color, queer and trans youth, and poor and working class youth

  • Proficiency in Google applications and Squarespace

Compensation

  • Starting pay is $15 an hour/24 hours a week. Benefits include paid time off and an $80 monthly cell phone stipend. The Campaign Lead position will exist as a temporary role between August 2019 and December 2020. There is potential, however, for the position to extend beyond that time frame and/or become permanent.
